A structure built out into the sea from the
coastline for use as a landing place or
promenade. The first British pier was built
at Ryde, Isle of Wight, in 1814. Eugenius
Birch (1818-1883) designed the West Pier,
Brighton 1866 (339 m/1,115 ft); Margate Pier,
1856; and the North Pier, Blackpool 1863.
